Undergoing a mastectomy means seeing your body change in ways you hadn’t imagined. We’re so used to associating femininity with breasts that not having them anymore can be nothing short of traumatic. However finding the right post surgery bra can really ease the transition and make you feel comfortable and supported in your body.
What is a mastectomy bra?
A mastectomy bra is worn after having a single or double mastectomy. Although it looks like any other bra it contains various features to make you feel comfortable after breast cancer surgery such as pockets, wide bands, hidden seams, wide straps for comfort and so on. Having a mastectomy bra to wear after surgery can give you peace of mind since it's likely that your breast shape isn’t the same anymore.
Here are some features to look for when buying a mastectomy bra:
Pockets
Most mastectomy bras (including all our bras at Meadow) are pocketed to insert prosthesis or breast forms. These usually contain pockets on both breasts which means you can wear them if you’ve had a single or double mastectomy. All our pockets are made of cotton so they can be smooth and soft against your skin when it's extra sensitive after surgery.
Softness
Mastectomy bras should be super soft so they don't aggravate any scars or sensitive skin. All of Meadow’s bras are made with supersoft fabric to ensure this.
Non-Wired & Wide Waistband
After surgery it's likely that the last thing you want is wires poking you which is why most people opt for non-wired bras. Wide waistbands are also preferred as these provide support yet don't irritate scars.
Broad straps
It’s nice to have bras with broad adjustable straps to give you added support after surgery.
Front Closure
Often mobility is limited after surgery which is why front closures make it easier to wear and take bras off.
Mastectomy Bra Styles
There’s a wide variety of mastectomy bras to choose from so pick the one which looks and feels the best to you. Below are some common options:
Soft bras are great right after surgery and to lounge in at home. These are usually made of cotton, modal or other soft fabric and have a bit of stretch.
As you start to recover you might want to bring some movement back into your routine. Sports bras are great for this and provide you with extra support you need after surgery. Some women, especially those who have had a reconstruction, prefer wearing a sports bra right after they come out of their hospital bras.
T Shirt bras have light padding and inserts for breast forms. These are great for everyday wear and provide a great shape under clothing.
Many mastectomy bras have front closures. These are great right after surgery and some people continue to wear them beyond recovery.
Many women choose to go to specialty stores to get fitted for a mastectomy bra, however we can help you find the right style and fit from the comfort of your home. Get in touch for a personal consultation.
